Honest— we’re not on an island! Pender Harbour is on the southwest coast of British Columbia, on the Sunshine Coast, but you must travel by ferry to get here.

There are rumours of 4x4 routes from the Squamish area, but we haven’t been able to confirm even one of them.

The Sunshine Coast Highway reached Pender Harbour in 1936, with relief gangs doing much of the labour, but it took until the 1950's for paving. With that, Pender Harbourites were connected by land to the rest of the Sunshine Coast, but it’s not hard to find old-timers who miss the isolation.

Visitor Pages

We think a lovely way to tour the coast would be in a classic steam train (think Royal Hudson), but the only railroad tracks on the coast are remnant scraps of the old, rather short, lines used to transport timber.

Directions

From the U.S. BORDER CROSSING at I-5

Take Hwy 15 north to get on the Trans-Canada Highway to Vancouver.

From VANCOUVER

Take the Trans-Canada (Upper Levels) Highway across the Ironworkers Memorial Bridge to Horseshoe Bay.

From HORSESHOE BAY (the ferry terminal)

Board a BC Ferry for a scenic, leisurely 40-minute trip to Langdale. Your return fare is free.

From LANGDALE (near Gibsons Landing)

After you disembark from the ferry, follow the Sunshine Coast Highway (Hwy. 101) north for 64 km, about an hour, to Pender Harbour.

Driving

The Sunshine Coast Highway (Highway 101) is a fairly level but winding route. If you don't know the road, don't speed; sharp corners may surprise you. If you're not comfortable driving at the speed as other traffic, please take advantage of a pullout to let it safely pass. Passing lanes are infrequent.

Always watch for wildlife. Deer may pop out onto the road anywhere, and Roosevelt elk are regulars in Kleindale.

Bicycling

If you must cycle the Sunshine Coast Highway, do so with caution! Pullouts are few, visibility is often restricted by turns and some sections of the Sunshine Coast Highway (Hwy. 101) lack shoulders.

We recommend taking advantage of occasional manicured routes constructed off-highway, but you cannot cycle to Pender Harbour without traveling on Hwy. 101.

On Foot

Malaspina Coach Lines (1-800-386-4456) makes daily Vancouver-Powell River runs, with Pender Harbour stops in Madeira Park and Kleindale.

Hitchhiking is legal on the Sunshine Coast.
