Madeira Park is the business centre of Pender Harbour, with the downtown area a showpiece of extensive landscaping, rockwork, and public areas. Murals by Walters and wood carvings by Jack Crabb grace outdoor locations while the old, double-ender, commercial fishing boat Harbour Spirit welcomes visitors from its high and dry, mini Stonehenge-meets-Buchart Gardens setting on Hwy. 101.

Francis Peninsula or (depending on the tide) Beaver Island, in Madeira Park, is the largest residential area in Pender Harbour.

History

  • Madeira Park - Named by the daughter of pioneer Joe Gonsalves in honour of her father's childhood home in Portugal, near the Madeira Islands. Early settlers rowed their small boats to gather here for Sunday socials, picnics and softball games.
  • Whiskey Slough - Early commercial fishermen lived in their boats and eventually built their home on this shores of this bay, which was named for the common sight of empty liquor bottles floating in the bay after celebration of a good fishing season.
