Do you fancy a leisurely stroll down a manicured path or a rigorous climb through wilderness terrain? Either, plus everything in between, is available to those who like to get up close and personal with Mother Nature in Pender Harbour.

“You’re not going out there to prove anything. You’re not going out there to rough it. You’re going to smooth it.

“You get it rough enough every day!”

Hiking Tips

  • Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to be back.
  • Bring a compass and, more importantly, know how to use it.
  • Bring first-aid and other emergency equipment.
  • Don’t rely on your cell phone— it may not work.
  • Bring water, protein snacks, your medication and a bag for your garbage.
  • Wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers and carry a rain poncho.
  • Be prepared for wildlife encounters. Carry bear-spray and a whistle, but not unsealed food that may smell interesting to a neighbourhood bruin. Feel free to sing as you hike— even if you have a good voice, it will likely frighten away all large wildlife.
  • Unless you’re familiar with the area or have a map, stay on the trail. A forestry map from the Government Agent's Office is invaluable for exploring our area, and don't hesitate to ask locals for hiking suggestions and tips about a specific destination.
  • Don’t start a forest fire. Our lush woodland vegetation is deceptively dry and flammable in summer and fall.
  • Leave the iPod behind; the sounds of the wilderness are part of the experience.

Where to Hike

The Sunshine Coast Regional District and volunteer community members maintain a number of easily accessible trails, and hikers can also take advantage of the community's history to explore decommissioned logging roads and old skidder trails.

See Trails for detailed descriptions of the more popular trails in the area.

We're thinking of a mountain-climbing page, and when that happens we'll tell you about Red Top... but it's not a leisurely hike!
