No one is sure where Kleindale begins and ends, but it's considered to be the area along Hwy. 101 from the foot of Misery Mile to the high school, and down Garden Bay Rd. to Percival's Farm of Black Angus cattle. Kleindale is infamous for its extreme (from a Pender Harbour perspective) weather, for llamas and the largest local populations of coyotes, wolves and elk.

Although mostly residential, this central area includes several small agricultural and light industrial zones, and is designated in our Official Community Plan for new commercial and industrial development. Artists' studios are juxtaposed with small industrial/commercial businesses.

History

  • What’s in a Name - Kleindale or “klein dal” means little valley. This would be appropriate because the neighbourood is located in a little valley, but it was named for the Klein family, who are not and likely never were little people.
  • Logging - In 1912 brothers Bill, Fred and Charlie Klein established logging and sawmill operations in the area now known as Kleindale. Huge timbers that formed the first, landmark Lumberman's Arch in Vancouver's Stanley Park were supplied by the Klein family.
  • Kleindale Cemetery - The small graveyard on Hwy. 101 was never legally sanctioned for use. Although it was closed in 1982, at least one subsequent burial took place, the last being that of Frank Campbell, husband of Marge (nee Klein). The SCRD maintains Kleindale Cemetery.
