Pender Harbour is at the junction of Malaspina Strait and Agamemnon Channel, with Mount Daniel in the background. It comprises the neighbourhoods of Madeira Park, Kleindale, Garden Bay and Irvine’s Landing.
Pender Harbour is a coastal community in transition, suffering growing pains caused by unprecedented, high-end residential growth and a changing demographic.
After government and industry regulations crippled our booming commercial fishing and logging industries, many Pender Harbour folk applied their local knowledge to arts and tourism careers. More financially secure residents created public gardens, rockwork, murals and statuary. Seafarer's Millennium Park formalized the project (yes, in 2000), and in 2004 we won a BC Communities in Bloom first prize.
Today, themed murals by Walters and bas relief wildlife carvings by Jack Crabb grace downtown buildings while the old, double-ender, commercial fishing boat Harbour Spirit welcomes visitors to Madeira Park at the Highway 101 intersection. The one thing that’s not changed is our lifestyle... it’s still laid back, easy, informal and, sometimes, irreverent.
