Madeira Park, where early settlers would row to for picnics and softball games, was named by Joe Gonsalves' daughter, in honour of her father's beloved childhood home near the Madeira Islands.
This is the business and population centre of Pender Harbour with a post office, liquor store, veterinary clinic, shopping centre, elementary school, the Pender Harbour Health Centre, Pender Harbour Legion, the largest of three government wharves, wharfinger's office and Dept. of Fisheries & Oceans office.
The largest residential area in Pender Harbour is on Francis Peninsula (or Beaver Island, depending on the tide).
A recent and ongoing facelift included extensive landscaping, rockwork, and public areas including Seafarer's Park and Iris Griffith Wetlands. The old double-ender commercial fishing boat, Harbour Spirit, welcomes visitors from its high and dry, Stonehenge-like setting on Hwy. 101.
