Pender Harbour Health Centre

604-883-2764

5066 Francis Peninsula Road, Madeira Park

The Pender Harbour Health Centre is open 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday and is operated by the Pender Harbour Health Centre Society. Our health centre was built when St. Mary's Hospital was closed in Pender Harbour and moved to Sechelt in 1964.

Emergency treatments, tests, minor procedures, counseling and other services are performed at the Health Centre by nurses, doctors, a dentist, chiropractor, physiotherapist, mental health workers and others.

Nursing services include blood pressure monitoring, wound dressing, injections, ear canal syringing, diet counseling, breast self-exam instruction, diabetic counseling and glucometer checks. Drawing of blood, electrocardiograms and specimen dispatch are available from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. In-home nursing is available by doctor’s referral.

Doctors working at the Health Centre may admit patients to St. Mary's Hospital and refer them to specialists both on and off the Sunshine Coast. Health Centre employees may refer patients to the BC Ambulance Service and other health-care agencies.

The Pender Harbour Health Centre is funded by space rental to health professionals, Regional District taxation, donations, proceeds from the Bargain Barn thrift store, society membership and fundraisers. Nursing services are provided through a Vancouver Coastal Health Authority contract. Rick MacDonald is the health centre’s administrator.

St. Mary’s Hospital

Sechelt

St. Mary's Hospital in Sechelt is equipped with an emergency room, laboratory, surgery, 38 patient beds and diagnostic equipment such as ultrasound and x-ray. Although St. Mary's provides services adequate for most patients, some are referred or transferred to Vancouver for specialized surgeries, procedures and treatments.

Pender Harbour was the site of the original St. Mary's, the first hospital on the Sunshine Coast (in Garden Bay/Hospital Bay), built by the Columbia Coast Mission with lots of help and donations from locals. The community remembers its heritage every summer at Hospital Bay Day, centered around the Sundowner Inn, which opened as St. Mary's Hospital, Aug. 16, 1930.

St. Mary’s Hospital is planning a 11,000 sq. ft. expansion which will cost nearly $40 million. The Provincial Government announced in June, 2007 that they will fund 60% of the project. The balance will be paid by the local hospital district.
